Hagerstown Man Causes Several Accidents and Gets DUI Charges

A Hagerstown man caused several accidents, and nearly hit two children while driving under the influence on Tuesday.

Forty-two-year-old James Matthew Goldsmith from North Potomac Street is charged with seven other driving offenses. His charging documents show that he was charged with negligent and reckless driving and driving with a suspended license. He did not get a bond during a hearing on Wednesday before Washington County District Judge Terry A. Myers.

Around 5 p.m., the police got a call to respond to an accident at the intersection of South Mulberry and East Baltimore streets where a driver was stopped at a traffic light when his vehicle was directly hit by a blue Volkswagen Jetta, that was heading in the wrong way of a one-way street.  The Jetta drove off the scene.

Shortly after that accident, another one occurred, involving the same blue Volkswagen Jetta.

The Jetta was found on Champion Drive, and the driver was identified as Smith. Inside the vehicle, the officer saw eight empty liquor bottles.

A passenger in the Jetta told police that he and Goldsmith had been driving around drinking and that Goldsmith drove away from the scene of the first accident. The passenger also said that he did not know why Goldsmith “drove after the two kids on bikes.”

A woman informed the officer that the Jetta almost ran over her son and another boy. The boys said they saw the Jetta driving in their direction, and they had to run out of the way to avoid the hit.  The boys said the Jetta crashed a pole and ran over the dirt bike.

Goldsmith admitted everything. His BAC showed 0.16 percent.
