Four Vehicle Collision in St Mary’s County Claims Two Lives

A four-vehicle collision in St Mary’s County claimed the lives of two people. The crash occurred on Tuesday evening, August 31st. The Maryland State Police did not state the cause of the accident.

At about 6:50 p.m., troopers with the MPD Leonardtown Barrack responded to Pegg Road in Spring Valley Drive in Lexington Park for a multi-vehicle crash. The severity of the collision in St Mary’s County also warranted the presence of the Maryland State Police Crash Team. In a press release, the investigators stated that their preliminary investigation revealed an Audi S4 crashed head-on with a Nissan Rogue in the center turn lane of Pegg Road.

The Nissan then side-swiped a Ford Escape, which overturned. As the vehicle overturned, it struck another Nissan. The occupants of the Nissan Rogue, Sherish Lynn Guthrie, 53, and Hilda Gale Kanney, 73, both of Lexington Park, died at the scene. Medics took the male Audi driver to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital for treatment.

The accident led to the closure of the road for four hours. During the closure, another vehicle crashed into the St. Mary’s County vehicle on Pegg Road. The police cited the driver involved, Duane Monroe Reese, 24, of Lexington Park, for driving under the influence and reckless driving. The investigators transported him to Leonardtown Barrack before transferring him to St. Mary’s County Detention Center for processing.

The MPD is continuing the investigation into the multiple-vehicle collision. Once they complete the inquiry, they’ll transfer the case to the St. Mary’s County State’s Attorney Office. The state attorney will determine the charges if any.
